You Can Still Make Gold Without Cataclysm

Posted December 22nd, 2010 by Miss Mediocre

I got an e-mail from a reader requesting I go over some gold making strategies for people who have yet to get their hands on the Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft. I believe the majority of my previous posts about gold making would still work today, even after the Cataclysm, so I thought I’d do a quick re-cap of some of the things I’ve talked about recently!

Flipping items works just as well now as it did before the release of Cataclysm. If you’re only looking to grab a few extra gold, flipping Enchanting Vellums (sold by Enchanting Supply Vendors) or Vanishing Dust/Dust of Dispersion (sold by Inscription Supply Vendors) always works. One of my favorite niche markets is still flipping the three BoU pets sold by Breanni in Dalaran. They have actually gone up in price on my server, as it’s more of a pain to get to and from Dalaran now, so I tend to be the only one selling them.

If you happen to be an Engineer you could always check out my post on selling Engineering pets to make some decent gold. Or if you’re a tailor, Netherweave, Frostweave and Abyssal bags are still selling like hot cakes, plus the mats for the Abyssal bags are way cheaper now (on my server anyway) but they still sell for up to 300g. If Blacksmithing is more up your alley, I find a lot of the markets others worked so hard to control before Cataclysm hit, are now totally abandoned! For example, I’ve been selling Fel Iron Rods for 200g a piece! So check your Auction House, I’m sure there’s a gap left somewhere by someone who is now submerged in the expansion that you can fill!

If you want more pre Cataclysm gold advice, check back through the archives of some of the blogs on my blogroll as well! A lot of what was covered before might still work for you, and now you’ll have less competition!

Also, Zenith from Zenith’s Round Table has covered 3 ways to make gold without the expansion that are worth checking out!

Another thing you can do is buying under priced Cataclysm enchanting scrolls from the AH to sell later (or to use for yourself when/if you upgrade to Cataclysm). Most are selling for less than 10 gold, but they’ll be valuable some months (maybe even weeks) from now, when there will be less people making them to level Enchanting.

I’ve been buying some of these on my server. I suggest checking the materials used to make them before buying (or at least, deciding how much to buy them for). The key point to consider is not how much they’re selling for below materials cost now, of course (which can be a huge discount) but how much of a discount they’re selling for *given what materials prices WILL end up at in the future*.

A few scrolls I’ve seen being dumped need not just some Hypnotic Dust, but also an essence or two.

Of course, this isn’t ‘making gold’ as such, but more of an investment opportunity. It’s a Warren Buffett approach; buy when everyone is selling, sell when everyone is buying.

    I have 3 tips on this topic over on my blog;
I plan on writing a few more tips to round out the year.

    Happy holidays, Zenith

I am still selling between 10 and 20 eternal belt buckles a day at 30 to 40 gold each. Since I stocked up on cheap saronite ore before the expansion and the eternals used to make them are selling for 8g a stack pretty good gold

    Kreaton : Thanks! That’s a really good idea 😀

Indy : I’ve been leveling my enchanting very slowly as I come across mats, but I did notice the insanely low prices of some of the new enchants when I went to sell what I had made. Some were going for as cheap as 2-5g! Needless to say, I haven’t sold any of mine, and have now been grabbing what I can for under 10g a piece (of the more useful ones) to save to sell later on.

I don’t understand why people would even bother selling them so cheap?

    Nice quote! 😀

Zenith : I’d forgotten, but the person who had e-mailed me mentioned your tips, and I just forgot to check them out! I updated my post to include links to all of them!

:) Happy holidays to you too!

Before enchanting scrolls, people power-leveling enchanting would enchant a piece of gear over and over, throwing away the enchant. Dumping the scrolls on the AH gets at least *something* back for the person who won’t devote any storage space to them. So… it’s not completely stupid from their point of view. (Shortsighted, yes.) We’re providing a service, long term storage, for which we expect to be paid when we sell the items… incidentally, lowering the future prices that they’d otherwise pay, and taking a cut out of the future profits of these enchanters dumping all this stuff.

Oh… I guess we’re also raising the current prices the dumped items are going for, by providing a floor. Oh well, guess we help everyone sometime!

(BTW, the quote is from Warren Buffett. Arguably, he’s the greatest investor of all time.)

zecdk : That’s awesome, I actually have a big stockpile of Saronite that I bought cheap as well, so I’ll have to check the belt buckle prices on my server!
