Dear RIFT, Where Have You Been All MyLife <3

Posted March 9th, 2011 by Miss Mediocre

I am still alive! Though I’m not sure I can say the same for my WoW subscription…

I had never even heard of RIFT until I noticed people mentioning it on Twitter. I had no intention of playing another monthly subscription MMO, and figured I’d just give it a try once they came out with a free trial, just so I could  see what all the fuss was about. Circumstances dropped a “free trial” right in my lap only a couple days after release (thanks to access to a friend’s account)

My Warrior

and after about an hour, I was fishing out my credit card for my very own copy. I went into RIFT wanting to hate it. WoW has been a big part of my life over the last 5 years and I felt like RIFT was just the shiny new toy in the sandbox that everyone fights over. I was determined to remain loyal to my dear WoW, so I was on the lookout for RIFT fails from the moment of my Ascension. That was days ago, and I still haven’t found any noteworthy disappointments.

For those of you who are as in the dark about RIFT as I was before jumping into Telara last week, it is basically WoW, only with lots of little things that I always wished Blizzard would implement but never did. Like what you ask? I prepared a list…

My Mathosian Rogue

-ARMOR DYE! PINK armor dye! (Well, light purple, but it looks pink)
-Great looking characters
-Awesome character customization
-Instant Auction House mail
-Sweet looking armor/weapons early on
-There’s so much going on all the time with RIFTS and Invasions
-Amazing class builds
-Public Groups (no more having to wait to invite someone to group while they decline and steal your quest mob!)
-You can “salvage” armor and weapons you craft for some of your crafting materials back!
-You get three professions!

These might seem like silly trivial things, but sometimes it’s the little things that count! RIFT has everything that WoW has; PVP, Quests, Professions, Achievements, Dungeons, Guilds, Auction House, Lore, Etc, but then it also has improved or corrected a lot of the things that have always bothered me about WoW. I didn’t think any game could ever get me to leave my 160,000g or 12 level 80+ characters behind, but I don’t even feel bad about it! I know I could still be in the “honeymoon” period with RIFT, so even though I’m pretty sure RIFT can hold my attention for the next few years, I’m giving myself until the end of March to play WoW again before canceling my account, just in case.

My Kelari Rogue

So far I have a level 19 High Elf Guardian Cleric (who is just adorable) and she is my “main”. I have a level 18 High Elf Warrior that I really like as well and a level 11 Mathosian (Human) Mage who has Crumbly, her stone elemental guardian to tank stuff for her, hehe. I also have a level 6 Kelari (Dark Elf) rogue with pink pigtails! You can only have 6 characters per “shard” (server), but so far that’s been okay. My Guardians are on the Millrush shard and my Defiants are on Kelpmere.

In addition to questing and fighting off Elemental invasions, I’ve been working on professions. So far I have a miner, butcher (skinner), forager (herbalist), armor smith, and an outfitter (tailor + leatherworker). I’ve also been playing the Auction House a bit! I was sad I couldn’t afford a mount right away, so I hit the Auction House to do some flipping! I’ve already made 15 platinum just buying cheap artifacts (which you collect to turn in as sets for vanity items such as funny helms, pets, and mounts) and selling them for more. Now even my baby characters get horseys! Hopefully it won’t take me too long to become RIFT rich, since I’m thinking the RIFT AH will be pretty similar to the WoW one.

My Cleric

Hopefully none of you are thinking, “I’m not reading this blog anymore if she doesn’t write about WoW stuff!”, but if you are… Go try RIFT! Honestly, I haven’t read any bad reviews on it or heard of anyone disliking it so far! Plus I still might keep WoW active, if only to log on when I’m REALLY bored and do Archaeology, lol. I do want that Troll sword, even if I’ll never use it.

What are your thoughts on RIFT vs WoW? Have you been playing RIFT? What’s your favorite race, class or faction so far? Leave a comment and let me know!

Thanks for Reading!
Now to get back to RIFT!

I am right there with you. My main is a rogue marksman primary soul (ranger is the second) that hit 24 last night. I love the invasions and rifts. Can go off in the boonies and solo them if I am feeling unsociable, or join the huge raids when invasions are on.

I haven’t tried the dungeons yet.

I miss my suite of AH addons though. Not really looking forward to trying to track prices manually. I’ve sold a few crafting mats and odds and ends, but still feeling my way around there.

I agree it’s prettier, and characters are also. I found the dye vendor too. Green for my “hunter’s” coat.

Not playing to deactivate my WOW account though. Friends and playing the guild growth and gold game are still interesting.

We aren’t on same servers or I’d hunt you down and say Hi.

Can you please do an article about the “learning curve” of going to a new a MMO? The only MMO I’ve ever played is WoW and while I want to try Rift, I don’t want to have relearn everything (town locations, how professions work, trade chat lingo, etc).

  3. Miss Mediocre

Ceyla : I have been missing my Auction House addons as well, but I’m getting along without them, everything just takes 3 times as long, lol.

If there were still people on WoW that I played with, I wouldn’t think of deactivating my account either, but I have been playing it as a solo game for so long that no more than two people would even notice if I deactivated my account, lol. I mean, I only have one friend I play RIFT with, but that’s more people than I was playing WoW with.

Thanks for commenting, and happy RIFTing! :D

  4. Miss Mediocre

ChadG : Yes I can do a post about that, though RIFT and WoW are the only MMOs I’ve ever played for more than a few minutes. There really isn’t much of a difference between WoW and RIFT, chat lingo is the same, you get directed to towns through questing and following your minimap, even the default hot keys are the same! I’ll go into more detail in a post, but if you’re worried about understanding RIFT, don’t be. As a WoWer, you’ll have no problem catching on quick! Thanks for the post suggestion :)

I’ve been interested in checking Rift out, but haven’t been able to locate a free-trial. I’m not up for dropping the money onto a new game that I may not enjoy as much. I’ve played (and beta tested) most every MMO that’s come along, and I’ve always gone back to WoW in the end. Rift sounds like it may have some nice advantages though.

  7. Miss Mediocre

Zathanos : I felt the same way, and hadn’t intended on trying RIFT until they came out with a free trial. I’m glad my friend let me give it a try on their account though because I’d hate to be missing out on all the fun I am now having, hehe. Hopefully they add some kind of free trial soon, because I’m sure that’s all that a lot of people are waiting for! :)

  8. Miss Mediocre

Scallywwagg : Aw don’t cry, I’m going to write a post about WoW again later this weekend! I haven’t deactivated my account yet! :)

  9. fluxdada

I am falling in love with Rift as well. I decided rather than cluttering up Power Word: Gold I would start a new blog specifically for Rift. I started Rift Stalker to contain all my Rift joy. Keep up the great writing no matter the subject and I’ll keep reading. :) -flux

  10. Miss Mediocre

Fluxdada : I was considering making a Rift blog as well, but I don’t think I’d have the time to keep going with this blog, have a Rift one, and play Rift as much as I want to, lol. I hadn’t visited your WoW blog before, but big congrats for getting the Ashes of Al’ar! If I had one of those I doubt I could consider leaving WoW, hehe. It’s so pretty! I’ll be sure to follow your Rift Staker blog as well, I need to start building myself a Rift specific reading list now that I’m obsessed with it! :D

  11. Shaft Almasy

This is very interesting and let me tell you why. Recently I got a job after an extended period of unemployment so I have let my WoW time end as to be honest even without the job taking up a huge amount of my formerly free time I just was not into it since the new expansion. Blizzard seems to be forcing me to race to 85 and then find a raiding guild only to endlessly grind its rep until there is an actual point in me being a member.

I have been hearing all the hype about RIFT and went to the site to have a good read about the lore and playstyle and it looks great to me. I have decided though that I will be taking a break from gaming until I can afford a new machine as my old Dell is on the way out.

I’ll be staying with the blog for sure no matter what you decide to do about WoW.

  12. Miss Mediocre

Shaft : I was feeling the same way with WoW, and hate the fact that once you grind all the rep, you’re stuck with that guild no matter what happens unless you want to do it all over again. I know WoW is great for end game raiding, but that’s just not my thing, which is why I wasn’t really playing much, even before I found Rift. Hopefully whenever you get a new pc, you can give it a try and love it too! :)

    Thanks for the support! :D

  13. DeMeNtEd

HEY lil lady lol sry i been away from ur blog a lil but but im back…dont worry lol…jk =p but yea i got rift about 3-4 days ago depending on when u read this and i agree its awesome lol…plays out just like WoW but i agree it has perks that WoW doesnt, i gotta say i found the most helpful is having the lock action bar button right next to the action bar lol…i hated always logging into WoW’s interface menu lol not that its a hassle but just more convienient lol like when im in the middle of a dungeon and i drag somethin off the bar i dont have to stop and hold up the group or miss out on a mob to fix it…lol sry im rambling and ima have to play on guardian more if thats where ur “main” is lol i have a defiant 24 ranger on kelpmere…if u find urself in my neck o the woods hit me up names “demented” lol …

  14. DeMeNtEd

O and on a side note…i dont think u should start a new blog…this one is sooooooooooo awesome lol…maybe just have a separate section of rift, like u do with the sims and D&D and food =) lol cause when i think miss medicore i think gaming blog not WoW blog =)

  15. Miss Mediocre

    DeMeNtEd : Lol, I’m glad you’re back!
That lock action bar button is pretty amazing! It’s so simple, but I agree, just so convenient! :D
I’ll have to add you to my defiant’s friends list! It’s cool that you’re on Kelpmere too! I haven’t had a chance to play defiant too much yet, but I will certainly get to it!

  16. Miss Mediocre

DeMeNtEd : I had tried to make this site about ALL games, not just WoW, but it definitely became pretty WoW focused over the last little while, hehe. I’m glad you still think of it as a “gaming blog” instead of just a “WoW blog” though! :D

  17. DeMeNtEd

lol thats awesome..but i gotta say ur prolly waaaaaaaay more advanced on ur guardian then i am on my defiant lol maybe i can just re roll a guardian and hit ya up =) lol…since im still tryin to pull my real life friends from their “achievements” in WoW im not really tied down to any server/faction lol

  18. Miss Mediocre

DeMeNtEd : I’m level 33 on my guardian, not TOO advanced, but I have a level 21 too. If you do start playing on Millrush you should join the guild I’m in… It’s called Nemesis, I think?

  19. DeMeNtEd

nice lol ill keep an eye out for em…i rolled guardian on millrush and i just ding’d 20 over the weekend…i created a guild called the PsYcHoNaUtS…but we should def quest together on ur 21…i rolled a lil mage so i could use all the help i can get questing =p lol his names demented if u ever see him runnin around on his choco horse =p

ps…i love how nobody in the game has stolen my name lol

  20. Miss Mediocre

DeMeNtEd : I really like how you can still basically get if not your first choice, at least your second or third choice for a character name! I’d spend hours trying to come up with something I liked, but that wasn’t already taken in every version and language by someone else on my server in WoW.

I haven’t seen you around yet, but I was distracted from my Rifting by the Sims Medieval this past week. What level have you reached now??

  21. Blaze

Hey Miss… Your characters look great! Each and every one of them look like you spent alot of time focusing on the small details of them. Until I seen your Kelari rogue I didn’t even know it was possible to make them look attractive. lol. Well, happy gaming I begin my adventure into Rift as soon as I get home from work. I can’t wait! -Blaze

  22. Miss Mediocre

Blaze : Thanks! I do put A LOT of time into making them! It’s lots of fun. :) Good luck jumping into Rift! Hopefully you like it!

  23. Mr Dexler

Hmm have heard good things about Rift guess I will look into it..started WoW about a month ago and I am hooked (yes naieve noob I see few faults)..will have to see what the Rift learning curve is like.

ummm if you are tired of WoW btw there is a fire mage named Ashfireburn who would love to be in your toons last will and testament for gold/item bequeathing if you cancel!…lol
