New Hardware Makes Rift So Pretty! WoW Not So Much…

Posted March 11th, 2011 by Miss Mediocre

Hello Readers,

I was very lucky and got some new ram and a new video card for my aging PC! I hadn’t been too concerned with it’s performance until I started playing Rift, which lagged pretty hard even on the lowest video settings. My computer was pretty cheap when I got it though, and that was a few years ago, so it wasn’t a big deal to drop a bit more money on it now for such a sizable upgrade! I can now play Rift on the “Ultra” setting which just looks amazing, and it runs great! I thought I’d log back onto World of Warcraft to see how things looked in Azeroth with my sweet new graphics, since I had been running it on a pretty low video setting as well. I was sad that I could barely see the difference.

A big part of getting into a game for me, is how well I can get into whatever character I’m playing. I spend a very long time picking the perfect name, hairstyles, features, etc, even when there aren’t many options to choose from (as with WoW). If I rush the process, or settle with a name I don’t love, I usually end up deleting the character. What ended up happening in WoW, since there are so few features that don’t just look ridiculous (at least for the females of Azeroth and especially for the Night Elves who basically have two pretty faces to chose from) is that all my characters ended up either looking the same, or they didn’t look how I wanted since I was trying to make them look different than the rest of my characters and there wasn’t a halfway point between what I already had, and hideous.

Rift on the other hand is a character creator’s dream. I have spent hours so far making and re-making characters, and they are all unique but also look how I want! There aren’t any more hairstyles than WoW races have, but the difference is that they all look good! Sure as a Human female in Azeroth you have 24 styles to choose from when you visit the barber shop, but over half of those look awful and only one or two actually look good! I realize WoW is an old game, and of course it won’t look as good as something that was just released, but even if Blizzard would add hairstyles that actually looked good and fit on your character’s head it would be a start. Or let people change the color of their armor and weapons so that everyone isn’t always running around looking the same.

I didn’t actually intend for this to be a post, I just wanted to share this picture of my WoW main beside my Rift main so that you can see just why Rift has me so hooked and why Rift is quickly pushing WoW out of my daily gaming schedule, lol.

I tried this game out at my friend Aarons place this afternoon and I was really blown away by how polished the game feels for a game only released a short time ago.
This game really came out of no where for me. I had really accepted the horrible fact that WoW was going to be king for a very long time with no change in sight but the 2 hours I played Rift for was a pure pleasure.

Daniel : You are the first person I actually know to leave me a comment! :D

I couldn’t believe how polished it was either. I remember WoW in the early days, so I was expecting to get stuck in the ground, have quests bug out, see tons of server shutdowns and restarts, but that hasn’t been the case at all! I’d always laugh whenever someone would suggest another mmo being a “WoW Killer”, and I didn’t hear anyone say that about Rift, but that’s just what it’s been for a lot of people, me included. I’m glad you enjoyed Rift, any plans to play it regularly??

.. you’re only making me wanting to play rift, something that I’ve been putting off for a purpose, stop making these darn Rift posts!!! Lol :P

I’ll try it soon enough.. Hopefully it’s as good as people say it is.

  4. Miss Mediocre

Mageshadow : Hehe, sorry! It most definitely is as good as people say, but for the sake of your WoW toons, hold off as long as you can, lol.

Well, of course rift looks better. It is using considerably newer technology, while WoW still has 2006 graphics. And quite frankly, basing the two games on that perspective is rather silly. Rift is simply a shiny WoW wannabe. It won’t last nearly as long as WoW will.

Seth : “I realize WoW is an old game, and of course it won’t look as good as something that was just released, but…” lol.

I was just as defensive as this about the two before I tried Rift as well, and I wasn’t trying to make a point about how Rift looked better so was better, I was just saying how much better the character customization is, and how I enjoy playing a character more when they look unique. There’s lots Blizz has talked about doing to make character’s more unique in WoW (armor dyes, the dance studio, etc) but they never followed through. I’ve never really been an “end gamer” more of an “altoholic” which may be why Rift appeals to me so much.

I guess only time will tell if Rift is here to stay :)

If I had a pc capable of running it well I would.
If I could safely spend the money to get a new computer I would… this one is 3 years old almost now… so its a bit weak in the graphics card department.

I felt the exact same way when I stopped and actually looked carefully at my characters in the Rift char creation screen.

I was blown away. I made a post about it on Rift Stalker.

ima side step on this post and ask a question =) u have a link to all ur WoW toons…do u plan on making a link of ur rift toons…and maybe sims toons or whatever else u play lol…i mean i think u should most def make one for ur rift toons…it’ll show ppl what u mean on how they can look alike but not the same =) i assume u have various models of high elf alts lying around that would love to have their pic taken =)

  10. Miss Mediocre

Daniel : Mine is around 3 years old as well I think. You could always just get a new video card! :D hehe

  11. Miss Mediocre

DeMeNtEd : I have been intending to update my WoW characters and have been taking lots of pics of my Rift toons so I can add them as well! :D I hadn’t thought of adding Sims, but I definitely could add my main few! I’ve been working on a new site design, so I may wait to update that page until after the new setup is in place, but I may not be able to wait, my Rift toons are so pretty I just want to share them, lol.

  12. Miss Mediocre

fluxdada : Those facial features are pretty amazing! :D

I’m not sure if you were linking to your post there, but it didn’t seem to work. I believe you were linking to this post though :)

nice to hear about the new site design, not that this one needds updating but refreshing every once in a while is never a bad thing =) and yea any game where u can customize anything would be good to share, shows more of ur creative potential =) i mean i hsvent played sims since…well the sims, (rosebud; rosebud; rosebud) but if u can still create ur own houses n stuff that would be another “canvas” u could use…its a lil outside the box and i dunno what tools they have but maybe lol…id look at it anyway lol =) i got ur back…

  14. Miss Mediocre

    DeMeNtEd : Haha sweet thanks!

That is a good idea, you can “share” your building creations from the Sims on the Sims site, so I could always link to my greatest Sim architectural masterpieces along with my characters :)

  15. Phyrea

    Holy shit,
I just realised my character is yours twin. We have the same hairstyle and colour.. lol

  16. Miss Mediocre

Phyrea : Lol, it’s all about the artifacts! I’m always surprised how much I make selling them, and how much I spend on them too, haha. I love that hairstyle, it’s my favorite of any race for sure!
