Sorry Chopper, You’re Just Not Worth It To Me

Since I’ve been walking around with pockets filled with more gold than I’ve ever had before, I was thinking it was time to purchase one of the “I have money” status symbols, and had decided on the Mekgineer’s Chopper. I haven’t been in a hurry to get one, so I’ve been keeping an eye on the Auction House for cheap parts, and so far have found myself the Elementium-Plated Exhaust Pipe for 900g and one of the Goblin-machined Pistons for 800g. My Warlock is my Engineer, and she just got Exalted with the Alliance Vanguard, so I was thinking I’d finally buy up the rest of the mats and make myself one.

I was looking through the Auction House, trying to decide if it would be cheaper to just buy the Titansteel Bars or make them myself, thinking about how sweet it was going to be to ride around on a chopper all the time! Then it came to me! After Cataclysm gets here, when would I ever actually be riding around on a ground mount?!

With the addition of Azeroth flying in Cataclysm, it’s likely that I’d only ever use a non-flying mount while in Battlegrounds, and I’m not really a big Alliance PvPer! I had noticed the price of the Choppers dropping over the last few months to where they sit now, just 1500 – 2000g more than the crafting costs, and I’m thinking that may be because the crafters have realized the Chopper’s uselessness in Cataclysm as well. Even if I knew there were going to be low level players I wanted to help out and drive around in the Chopper, it might be worth it to me, but with my guild recruitment skills failing and no low levels requiring my assistance, I just can’t bring myself to make one.

This might mean I lose out on the gold I spent buying the Exhaust Pipe and Goblin-machined Piston, but if they won’t sell, I could always just grab up the other mats and sell the Chopper for cheap, rather than using it. I’m pretty sure I could break even. I just think it’s far more worth my gold to wait and see what Cataclysm has to offer for new status symbol mounts!

What do you think? Are there any times the Chopper might be useful in Cataclysm that I haven’t thought of? Do you have one and love it and think I’ll be missing out? Let me know in a comment!

Thanks for Reading!

My warrior (who was my main for a very long time before I transferred him to another server and to the Alliance and is still my favorite class) has had engineering for as long as I can remember. Boy I love the cool little things you can do with that profession. I love my turbo charged flying machine and all that stuff too.

I was never good at making money and therefore I never had enough money for a chopper. Then again.. I never really wanted one. Pretty much for the same reason as you; I’d never find a time to use it, even before Cataclysm’s release. Hmm… if it were me, I’d probably make it and try to sell it to break out even or maybe even make a bit of gold in the process.

Raids and capital cities are still no fly zones AFAIK. So the most important places at 85 are still ground only.

When I hit 85k I decided I would buy a chopper, when it came to it I just couldn’t part with the gold so I decided that when I hit 100k I would. Eventually I bought one when I had 115k. I thought it was such a big dent in my gold but within 2 weeks I was back to 115k and now I am on 125k.

A fellow guildie who is also on the same amount of gold suggested that I was just making gold to make gold and I hadn’t actually spent anything and therefore what was the point. I feared that I wouldn’t be incapable of buying anything with my gold and whilst perhaps the chopper serves no real purpose except for being a 2 person mount – it’s so cool and I got an achievement. Therefore I am glad I got my chopper because for me it pushed me to realise that there was a reason I was making gold and it wasn’t just so I could become Scrooge McDuck in my guild bank.

Jazradel : You can fly in Capital Cities in Cata, but I hadn’t thought of raids! Though I’ve currently never stepped foot in a Wrath Raid with the character who would be getting the chopper, but I do hope to raid with her in Cata, so that’s a valid point!

  5. Miss Mediocre says:

Scallywwagg : Another valid point, hehe. I haven’t made any major purchases with my gold yet, and I don’t doubt I would make the money back very quickly… I’d also totally forgotten there was an achievement for having one!!! I’m a bit achievement crazy, lol. I am now beginning to wonder if it might just be worth it, especially if I have to make it to sell to keep from losing money anyway…

  6. Miss Mediocre says:

Rathay : Say you were good at making gold, and were bringing in about 10k a week… Would you be more likely to buy/make one then??

  7. Indy says:

I have a chopper, had one for a very long time — and I think that riding around on one is very cool, and lots of fun. That’s for me, someone who doesn’t feel the same way perhaps shouldn’t spend the gold on one.

One of the reasons people are poor — in game and in real life — is because they feel they need to spend money/gold on ‘status symbols’. Eradicating this impulse will greatly improve your financial standing.

Once you get a conversion mount (one that converts from a ground mount to a flying mount and back without remounting) you will never use your chopper again.

My Fav Conversion mount: Headless Horseman’s Mount

If you aren’t a mount collector going for the achievement, get a conversion mount and a mammoth and you’ll never need anything else.

  9. Miss Mediocre says:

Indy : That’s very true, I mean, it was something I wanted for a long time because it was so cool, but now that I won’t have much opportunity to use it, the main reason I would be spending the gold on it would be because it is a status symbol…

  10. Miss Mediocre says:

Cold : I tried every day during Hallow’s End to get the Horseman Mount on my main character, and have done so every year with her, but I don’t think it is meant to be, lol. I did manage to get it on all of my Horde 80s, but poor Lauriella is still conversion mountless. I’d consider buying myself a sparkly pony, if they weren’t as common as deathknights these days! I like the mount I use most to be a little special at least, lol, so hopefully they have a decently obtainable one available in early Cata that I can get!

  11. Rathay says:

No, I probably still wouldn’t get one. That’s just me though. I regret making my turbo-charged flying mount even though I love it. I never even ride it anymore. I always ride my blue drake. :s

  12. Kammler says:

I have a moving target too–first was 50k gold, then 70k, now its 100k. We’ll see. I am chasing Mountain ‘O Mounts so I need every one I can get. At some point I will have to break down and get it. And I do PVP so it would be useful there.

  13. Rivs says:

I bought a chopper, man I hated to part with the gold. I’m glad I did though cause I enjoy it. It’s nice to give lowbies rides to sometimes, or just putz around with guildies.

Plus my Forsaken mage looks BADASS! on one.

  14. Miss Mediocre says:

Kammler : I’m not too concerned with Mountain O’ Mounts, I’m sitting somewhere around 60, and know getting another 40 will cost a lot, lol. Perhaps once I have 100k I’ll work on it, but it will probably be a lot easier once Cata gets here as well! 🙂

  15. Miss Mediocre says:

Rivs : I don’t really know any lowbies, but I guess people will be making lots of alts come Cata, so it might come in useful then… I did make the chopper, but it’s in the AH right now. I am thinking I’ll keep it in there and if I can’t sell it before Cata, then I’ll just keep it, lol. It would be a lot cooler if I was an undead chick on a motor bike, but a blond human sporting pink and purple armor riding around on one could be fun 🙂

  16. Nevyn says:

I promised my gnome rogue a chopper once the bank registered 30k – mainly because a gnome on a chopper looks sooo funny! 🙂

But by the time I had geared her & my priest up a little, that 30k was looking a bit sickly, the date for Cata had been announced & I had stumbled across JMTC – where I had been levelling like a mad fool, I was suddenly at a loose end & now spend most of my time at the AH or on gold blogs – the cash pile is growing, slowly but steadily so I think the chopper can wait a while longer 🙂

  17. Miss Mediocre says:

Nevyn : I think I will get one eventually, once I have more gold than I know what to do with, lol. It is a huge chunk out of 30k, lol half in fact, which is why I could never justify keeping it… Even at 50k, that extra 15k was more appealing than the chopper.
