WoW vs The Sims Medieval

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

I’m not sure why exactly, but my interest in WoW has been fading a bit lately. I am very happy with Cataclysm, and there is still a lot I have yet to experience, but regardless I have noticed a significant dive in the amount of hours I spend logged in during a week. Real life has been crazy hectic with an unplanned move and some family stuff, but I do think I could have been playing WoW more than I have been had I really wanted to.

As anyone who reads my blog knows, in addition to WoW I am also very fond of the Sims. WoW and the Sims are at constant war for my attention, but thus far WoW has always  come out ahead. I am wondering if that is finally about to change? In March of this year The Sims Medieval will be released, and I am very excited to give it a try. The game appears to keep the basic concepts of the Sims 3, only in a medieval setting! Now I realize this will be far from a WoW replacement for the rest of Azeroth, but my toons are definitely a little concerned.

I think WoW has always won out in the past because I was addicted to the social side of it. Not only would I level this awesome elf all the way to level cap, but all my friends would see it and be like aw sweet way to go. Then we would all go stab a dragon together or something. I don’t know if I am just getting anti-social or the majority of players are getting slightly unapproachable, but now a days, despite recent efforts, I don’t talk to anyone. Maybe once a week someone will message me to see what’s up, but I spend the rest of my time playing WoW like any single player offline game. I don’t do dungeons because their difficulty scares me a bit and I hate doing bad, I don’t join groups for quests because everything is basically easy enough to solo and I don’t talk to people in general because there’s really no point. I enjoy questing and making gold and archaeology and achievements, but I wonder if there’s a point where those things lose their enjoyment, and if I am maybe nearing that point.

I am looking forward to playing the Sims Medieval because it’s something new with knights and castles and I love those things. Sure the Sims walking around my kingdom will be NPCs and sure I probably won’t be stabbing much, but I think I’ll be okay with that. Now if I blow through the whole game in a week like I did when the Sims 3 was released, of course I’ll be digging out my surveying gear and hitting some more Troll dig sites. If the Sims Medieval offers a similar amount of content to the Sims 3 plus it’s current expansions however, then WoW might be in trouble.

I don’t think the Sims Medieval requires much of a description, if you play the Sims you probably have a pretty good idea of what it’s going to be like just from *the Sims + Castles and  stuff* and if you don’t play the Sims you probably don’t care. If by chance you don’t play the Sims but want to check it out, the site for it is here.

Hopefully I don’t retire my toons anytime soon, maybe tomorrow I’ll find my Destroyer of Worlds and suddenly WoW will seem magical and wonderful all over again! C’mon RNG! Regardless of what game is holding my attention however, I’ll continue to blog about it! I’ve been thinking of leveling my Twinkerbell up to 85 and PvPing with her there, so if I get really into that maybe I’ll forget about the Sims Medieval completely?

Do you think you’ll be giving the Sims Medieval a shot? Is Cataclysm holding your attention? Have you been playing any other games? Leave a comment and let me know!

Thanks for Reading!

Simington Tower – Spacious High Rise Living

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

As my Late Night Sim gained gained popularity and simoleans, I began to look around for a bigger place. I moved my sim into every high rise in Bridgeport, but none of them were big enough to even think about starting a family in, so instead of retreating across the bridge to a house in the hills, I decided to make one myself!

Simington Tower is the Plasma 501 building after some huge renovations! Unlike all of the “apartment” buildings, Simington Tower has 3 floors of space in which to make your home! I set it up as a home for a full family of 8, and converted the basement of the building into a laundry room and a gym.

You cannot change any of the exterior walls, so I had to work with the space and shape the building already had, but I put my degree in Interior Design to good use, and I think it turned out well, hehe. Simington Tower has already gotten 6 recommendations on The Sims 3 site, which is more than any of my past creations have received!

If you also can’t bare to live back on street level with the rest of the Sim world, but need space to start a family, you can get Simington Tower from the Exchange on the Sims 3 site! Because it’s a high rise building, the pictures of the floors didn’t turn out right on there, so I’ll provide some here for those of you who are interested!

Also, a quick tip! If you ever want to move objects that are outside your unit in a building, just use the “moveobjects on” cheat! Some items can be a bit tricky, but if you pick it up and put it down a few times, it should work!

My Sim Story – Goodbye Riverview

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Just as Laura Simington was settling into her new home, word reached her of an amazing deal on a loft right in the middle of downtown Bridgeport! Though Laura had never aspired to stardom, she could not deny the big city’s ever growing appeal. Bright lights, limos, dance clubs and bars weren’t her main priorities by a long shot, but there was one thing about Bridgeport that had peaked her adventurous curiosity… Vampires.

Rumors had been flowing out of Bridgeport in waves about certain Celebrities who were supposedly Vampires. A leaked security cam shot showed Wogan Hemlock, a well known romance author, apparently biting the neck of a companion. Though Wogan had sued the paper that had published the photo with slander, and won, the photo had been in the back of Laura’s mind for weeks. Perhaps that was all Laura was seeing as she signed the lease papers for her new apartment 18 levels above the streets of Bridgeport.

Laura’s apartment was small. At first she thought this would bother her, as she was used to living right on the water in a small town, or traversing the vast deserts of Al Simhara. She wondered how she was going to live her life out of one bedroom, but she soon realized that she really only needed one thing in her apartment, her bed.

Laura’s first few weeks in Bridgeport were a blur of night clubs, parties, drinks and dancing. Before she knew it, Laura was on the other side of those velvet ropes and paparazzi were snapping pictures of her through open windows and riffling through her dumpster in the middle of the night. She just had a knack for impressing people, not surprising since she had fully explored  some of the most dangerous tombs in Al Simhara, and she ended up impressing some of the right ones.

One night while standing in the line to get into Plasma 501, the hottest night club in Bridgeport, Laura noticed Wogen Hemlock standing by the bar. She crossed her fingers and hoped that it wasn’t Stacy Paxton’s night off. Laura had become friendly with Stacy, the bouncer, while waiting in line earlier in the week, and she knew a quick hug and 25 simoleans would have her dancing within inches of Wogen Hemlock in no time!

Laura inched her way toward the door and caught site of Stacy’s orange ponytail as he shooed away some paparazzi. Laura waved to him and he waved back, motioning for her to come to the front of the line. She greeted Stacy with a big hug, slipping the 25 simloeans into his open palm behind his back.

“Laura, always a pleasure,” he smiled, unclipping the velvet rope and holding it aside for her to enter.

She smiled at him and nodded before making her way to the dance floor.

She contemplated how she should make first contact with Wogen as she danced to some electronica. She felt a little jittery and on some basic level a little frightened, but she assumed it was just nerves. She couldn’t stop thinking about Wogen and even thought she noticed him glance at her a few times. She was building up her confidence to approach him when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She spun around to see Wogen, holding out a Pomegranate Passion drink.

She blushed and smiled and accepted the drink, asking, “Aren’t you having one?”

“They don’t sell what I drink here,” he replied.

Laura danced and flirted with Worgen for hours until Plasma 501 closed for the night and they were kicked out. Neither were ready for the night to end, so they headed to Hogan’s 24 Hour Deep Fried Diner. Though he’d mentioned being hungry, Wogan didn’t eat much, but he did pay for Laura’s food. They then sat outside the diner having some deep conversation about life and love until the sun began to rise.

Laura liked Wogan, not just because he was a Celebrity author who may or may not be a Vampire, they also had a lot in common, and she’d been having an awesome time with him. Despite her exhaustion, she wanted to spend even more time with him, and was about to invite him back to her apartment when he blurted out that he’d had a great time, but had to go.

Laura was disappointed and shuffled off toward home, not glancing back to see Wogan’s clothes begin to smoke in the morning sunlight as he climbed into his black car.

My Sim Story – The Beginning

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Okay, so I realize this might seem like a silly feature to some of you, but I’ve been trying to come up with a way to incorporate more of the games I like into my blog, and a little series about the life of my Sim seemed like a good idea! It may be a bit juvenile, but sitting in the sun on a quiet afternoon imagining characters and their lives is still one of my favorite pass times, lol. That’s what I love about the Sims, creating a character and then living the story of their life! Hopefully even for those of you who don’t like the Sims, you’ll enjoy my Sim’s life story!

Laura Simington had but one goal in life, escaping Riverview! It’s not that there was anything necessarily wrong with the small, quiet community, but it just seemed too small at times. Everyone knew everyone, from the Goths to the Landgraabs, and the Sims of Riverview sure did like to gossip. Having no parents and growing up in an orphanage left Laura with no real ties to Riverview, so as soon as she’d saved up enough simoleans working part-time as a Stylist, Laura would take off for weeks at a time to explore the Pyramids of Al Simhara or to experience the lifestyle of Shang Simla. As she spent more time away she began to realize that exploration truly seemed to be her life’s calling!

As Laura became more familiar with Al Simha, she began to hear rumors from the locals about the legendary Pangu’s axe. There had been a few occasions when Laura truly had been caught between a giant rock and a hard place during her tomb exploration, and the axe was said to be able to smash giant boulders to smithereens. Laura always had been able to make friends quickly, and by using her charms she was able to find out that the axe was somewhere in Shang Simla!

Laura had been to Shang Simla in the past, but had never known about the axe! She’d spent her days drinking tea and learning Martial Arts, a skill she’d been perfecting at home since her last visit. While on her quest to find Pangu’s Axe, her Martial Arts training paid off, as she was forced to spar with a local before he’d give her any information. Once she’d proven herself worthy, he revealed that the axe was hidden in the Temple of Heaven.

Laura stocked up on provisions and headed to the temple right away. She had grown accustom to sleeping alone in tombs that had been sealed for centuries, so when she began to feel sleepy after her first day in the huge catacombs beneath the temple, she was prepared with a tent and bedroll! She did not sleep well that first night however, and vowed to purchase a higher quality tent if she made it out of the tomb alive!

Though Laura was caught by many traps throughout the temple, she was always prepared to extinguish herself with her trusty Shower in a Can! She found many hidden doors and switches, and swam through many underwater tunnels but finally, after almost 3 days beneath the Temple of Heaven, Laura discovered Pangu’s Axe! Pink bolts of energy flashed through it as she swung the mighty weapon, destroying a boulder like it was a house of cards! Laura knew she’d found a mighty relic indeed!

Laura escaped the Temple of Heaven with little difficulty, and headed straight to the local market where she purchased herself the Sultan’s Tabernacle, a truly lavish and expensive tent. After reporting in that she’d found the legendary Pangu’s Axe, and using it to fetch a relic for a local from the Hot Springs, Laura headed back to Riverview for some serious R&R. She’d made so much simoleans selling the relics she’d discovered in her adventures that she was able to purchase a nice lot right on the water, and build herself a very respectable home! Once the construction was complete, she began to wonder if perhaps settling in Riverview wasn’t so horrible.

Some Late Nights . . . Playing Late Night

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

I haven’t posted anything about the Sims in a while, simply because I’d grown a bit bored of Ambitions and had accidentally deleted my many accomplished Sims when reformatting my computer a few months back, and hadn’t felt up to doing everything all over again!

I had been looking forward to the release of the Sims 3 Late Night, which is basically the new updated version of the Sims Night Life. I’m a bit vampire crazy (not so much for the sparkly kind, but I do enjoy even them) and Vampires were finally being added to the game in the Late Night expansion!  I got the expansion installed Sunday afternoon, and have been doing little else since then, lol.

My first step was to move one of my characters into the new town. At first I was really excited to find out that you can actually live in skyscrapers! I moved my Sim into a little apartment with a nice view of the city, planning to one day kick out my neighbors and expand my tiny place. Unfortunately I found out that isn’t possible. Unless they release some way to edit skyscraper floors and apartments outside of the game, there is no way to change anything but the inner walls of where you live. The other units in the skyscrapers don’t actually exist, they are just black holes that NPSims disappear into when they aren’t out on the town. I guess that’s the only way they could  have the skyscrapers without the game becoming a lagfest!

My next Late Night adventure was to meet myself a Vampire! It was the middle of the afternoon, so I figured I’d kill some time at the Butterfly Gardens until the sun went down. As soon as I arrive what do I spot smoking in the sunlight? A Vampire! This was another disappointment. I was hoping being a Vampire would have serious benefits and serious obstacles! Sure you get all smokey and a bit grumpy sun-tanning  as a Vamp, but  I wanted it to be a challenge if you needed to get around during the day, like avoiding the streets, staying in the Subway, getting a special car with tinted windows, but that’s not the case at all. When I discovered this, becoming a Vampire got pushed to the bottom of my Late Night to do list.

Instead of flirting my way into life after death, I decided to become a Super Star. I had maximum level Martial Arts and Handiness from a few vacations, so I impressed celebrities by talking about those. You can’t do anything socially with a celebrity Sim until you impress them, but it wasn’t a challenge. I could impress 5 Star Sims later on with a different Sim character who only had a handiness level of 2 and a mixology level of 6.

Once my Sim started conversing with celebrities, I too became a celebrity. There were celebrity related opportunities fairly often, so by completing those and chatting up as many celebrities as I could manage, I was a Super Star by the end of the day. I wish it had been a little more difficult, as that is the main part of the expansion, and it only took a few hours to finish, lol. I also didn’t like how much your scandals effect your relationships! I ended up being enemies with over half the city because my Sim was a bit of a floozy. . . Lol, those damn paparazzi managed to catch me every time I did anything slightly less than savory, and then almost everyone I knew would suddenly stop being my friend. There was a social option to “Dispel Rumors”, but to go to each of my 30 odd friends every time I had a bit of Whoohoo in an elevator was just way too much trouble! There is an option to “Sue for Slander” by clicking on City Hall, but that didn’t help my relationships, it just made me 5,000 simoleans.

The main bonus about being a celebrity is all the free stuff you get. Depending on how many stars your Sim is, you will get a gift in the mail around the end of every week. My Sim ended up with 4 of the most expensive car, 3 pianos, 2 special guitars, 4 hot tubs, 3 fish windows, and a bunch of other random stuff. You end up making more simoleans selling all the free stuff than if your Sim had a job, lol.

After I’d finished becoming a Super Star, I figured it was time to open my very own Vampire Bar! I wanted to build one similar to Plasma, but I couldn’t place anymore skyscrapers in the city, and I didn’t want to demolish one of the existing bars in case the one I made was horrible. Instead I bought a lot just outside of town and built “Beyond The Rave” (get it, like beyond the grave, but with rave because it’s a club, lol). I’m actually pretty happy with my little underground bar, and it has been a “hot spot” for quite some time! I’d like my bar even more if my game hadn’t somehow glitched, causing every bouncer and bartender to disappear. They are there, but they are invisible? I don’t know how to fix it without just starting a new game, which is pretty lame!

Because I owned my own bar, I thought it was time to form a band of the same name and play some shows to help bring in the Vamps! I formed the band with my 5 Star Celebrity husband, who just so happened to be a pro with a guitar. My Sim played the piano. Apparently once you form a band, you will get phone calls with opportunities to play at different venues. I watched really close, but I never got one of those calls. I lost interest in the band thing pretty quick, you can’t set band uniforms and without any opportunities coming up, it seemed pretty fail.

Finally, it was time to become a Vampire! I started a new Sim and sent her off to the big city in search of some fangs. I met an old lady Vampire first with purple hair, and after becoming friends she agreed to turn me. She bit me on the wrist, said something about eternal slumber, and went on her jolly way. I went home and started working on Mixology (bar tending), because I thought it would be pretty cool to be a Vampire Bar Tender. It took a few days of walking around with itchy bite marks, but then just as I was sitting down to eat a nice bowl of cereal on the couch, I disappeared into a bit cloud of red smoke and bats, and emerged a Vampire. I threw that cereal in the trash, and headed out to find my first victim.

As a vampire you can click on a lot and select “Hunt”. I’m not sure how you choose your pray, but their portrait in your friends tab will have a bunch of swirls behind it so you know who you’ve chosen. As a Vampire you have two special powers. You can “Read Sims Mind” which lets you learn one trait, their sign, or one of their favorites. The second Vampire power is to “Make Sim Think of Me”, which sounds cool, but I have no idea what it does. It doesn’t appear to give you a boost to their friendship level or make social interactions any easier with that character. My final disappointment in Late Night was finding out that you don’t even need to drink from other Sims to survive as a Vampire. Every fridge is stocked with “Plasma Juice”, which is a little red juice box that a Vampire can happily live on without ever having to go hunting.

It’s just so sad. There’s so much Vampire stuff out there that the Sims could have drawn from to make the Late Night Vampires epic, but as it is they barely vary from normal Sims. You don’t even need to sleep in a coffin for goodness sake!

Something they did put some work into though, increasing Sims breast size! You can now choose how big you want your Simboobies to be, along with muscle size and muscle definition. They also added some very un-Sim-like lingerie with garters and stockings and the whole bit! They may not have been very inventive with this expansion, but Sims do seem to be getting sexier! lol.

How Can I Achieve My Ambitions When I Have To Deal With This Stuff!?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I do love the Sims, but occasionally when things bug out, I get very irritated with it! Usually I can figure out a way around the problem, like Gunther Goth’s feet being stuck in the ground so he was unable to move! I just used the “moveObjects on” and adjusted where he was standing so he could go home and not die, lol. Or yesterday I switched my “active household” because I play between 4 of them in my town. I guess there was one of the city hall celebrations going on when I made the switch though because suddenly EVERYONE in my town was stuck at City Hall, except for the ones in my Active Household. Eventually I had to bulldoze City Hall to make everyone go home before they died of hunger and exhaustion after standing there cheering for 4 days. Then, there’s not an appropriate lot size that fits the City Hall building, so in order to get it back where it was, I had to put it on an angle, which was slightly disappointing. This was like a 2 hour process, so although I worked though it, that was 2 hours I could have been playing my Sims!

They just wouldn't go home!

Very Stealthy...

My most recent issue that I have not been able to remedy is with my Investigator. Somewhere between switching households and active families, I lost my magnifying glass! Without it, I am unable to solve most of my cases, but I can find no way of getting a new one without quitting the profession, rejoining it, and hoping I’ll get a new one when I once again reach the appropriate rank. I’m already at rank 7 though, so I really really don’t want to have to do that!

Also, weren’t you supposed to be able to be a Tattoo Artist? I have not been able to find out how to actually do that yet! I know you can buy the chair and “Offer Tattoo” to people you invite over, but you don’t get any Tattooing Points to build up and you can’t register as a Tattoo Artist at City Hall. Maybe you can’t actually do it as a career, but I thought the preview for the game made it LOOK like you could, lol.

If any else has come across these issues but resolved them, or if you know how to become a tattoo artist, could you please leave me a comment and let me know! I’ve looked everywhere, but maybe the game is too new still and others haven’t encountered these issues yet, lol.

I’m a Dictator of Design – Sims 3 Ambitions

Friday, June 4th, 2010

I just reached the top of the architecture profession in The Sims 3 expansion – Ambitions. It is the first profession I tried, because build mode tends to be where I spend most of my time while playing Sims anyway!

Taking Measurements

I was having a hard time getting good reviews from clients when I was first starting out, but it does get easier as you advance! I don’t think I even received a “Great Review” until I was at the 5th level! At about the 4th level your Sim will get a Tape Measure. Now this isn’t something that goes in your inventory somewhere, so don’t waste time trying to find it so you can use it like I did, lol. You use the tape measure by clicking on one of the houses you are renovating and selecting “Take Measurements”. Doing this will result in your client giving your work a better review when you finish.

Discuss Renovation

At about the 7th level, your Architect will get the option to interview their clients before starting the renovations to find out if they have any traits that could help influence your design (ex: If the client is a book worm, you could use lots of book cases to help get a better review). This can be a bit of a pain to do however if the client isn’t actually home when you go to do the renovations. If that ever happened, I’d just forget about the interview. Usually by the time you reach that level, you’ll be getting great reviews every time anyway. There are 10 levels in total to this profession, ending in Dictator of Design.

Getting Great Reviews

Another trick to help improve your reviews is to bring along some paintings, sketches or sculptures you’ve done previously in your family inventory. You can hang these on the walls or set them on tables just like the purchasable art, but the clients always seem to love it if the art is home-made! You can also invite a client over, paint a portrait of them, and then hang that in their home for some major bonus points.

Basically, if you are having trouble with your reviews, just remember to avoid getting things cluttered (like leave SO MUCH SPACE around everything), make sure all the walls and floors are finished, don’t forget about adding some decor (a couple rugs and paintings can go a long way), and try to complete the renovations without spending the whole budget!

Annoying Glitch

If you are rushing through the profession like I was, you may have found the two days off a week annoying. You can actually work from home though, by talking to your friends and convincing them to let you work on their homes at any time. One thing to watch out for however if you are working on your friend’s houses on your days off, is to not get a promotion while you are in the middle of a project. A few times I would finish my last renovation of the day a few minutes after 6pm, so I couldn’t show it to the client. Then if I advanced a level at home, that project I had been working on would no longer be available, and I would not get credit for the work I’d done. It is an avoidable little glitch though, as long as you are aware of it!

Town Hero

Once you have worked your way up to Dictator of Design, you will have two trophies and a key to the city to show for it. You also get a big celebration at City Hall, which the whole town attends, and you get a 4 day buff called “Town Hero”. I did enjoy this profession, but I must admit that my current Sim’s house is one of the saddest I’ve ever lived in! After spending all day building and decorating everyone else’s houses, I didn’t feel up to working on my own, lol.

Never Run Out Of Budget Money

As an after note for any of you cheaters out there, I did find a glitch that basically gives you an endless budget with which to work on your renovations. If you have some sketches and paintings in your family inventory, you can place them in the house you are renovating, which doesn’t cost any budget money. You can then move the object back into your family inventory, which adds the total cost of the item to your budget, as if you were selling something from the house. I did find the budgets to be pretty fair though, but if you want to do something really extravagant, I guess this trick could be useful!

Casa Sima – The Sims 3

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

So my favorite thing to do in the Sims is to build houses! I absolutely love the customization available in the Sims 3 for the building and furnishing components and have spent up to 8 hours just building and furnishing a house! My greatest Sim creation to date is Casa Sima, which I built to resemble Casa Loma in Toronto Ontario. Another thing I love about the Sims 3 is the online community and the opportunity to share your creations with other Sim 3 players! It really makes building such a time consuming sim palace more fun when you can see how many other people liked it! If you would like to download and add my Casa Sima to your game, you can get it on the Sims 3 site here!

I am currently working on a new mansion for a Sims 3 competition I am taking part in. The winner must have the most simoleans, the nicest house, and the most interesting family, all without any cheat codes. I have already been working on this new house for about 7 hours, and haven’t even furnished it yet, so whenever it is finished I will post it on here!

New Sims 3 Expansion – Ambitions

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

So another game that I play from time to time is the Sims 3! When the game was first released I hated how badly it was lacking content, but slowly they are making expansions, and the game is growing on me. I got World Adventures as soon as it was released and enjoyed gallivanting around Egypt and Paris and China, but my interest was beginning to wane once again, so I was glad to see they are about to release the next expansion: The Sims 3 – Ambitions!

Apparently this will be the first Sim game where you can actually control your Sim while they work! Finally! They will be adding lots of new careers, which will be nice seeing as Sims 3 was definitely lacking the amazing career choice available by the time you got through all the expansions for The Sim 2. I am excited about checking out the architecture career, which will let you customize your neighborhood in some way!

Some of the careers available will be:

  • Sculptor
  • Fire Fighter
  • Stylist
  • Inventor
  • Private Investigator
  • Doctor
  • Ghost Hunter
  • Tattoo Artist
  • Architect

The expansion should be hitting stores June 1st 2010, so if you are a forever Sim fan like myself, make sure you start saving up that allowance money!

Here’s the video (notice the awesome Rise Against Sim Song! ^^)

Thanx 4 Reading!
